Reading Sprints

Between us, the six Moderators of NBRC read about 1300 books per year. To some people that seems staggering, to others (particularly our group members!) that is "normal". So how do people read so much?

One way to fit in more reading is by joining our Reading Sprints. You can do a casual sprint by finding 20 minutes or so here and there to read, or sign up for Relay Sprinting which is held on weekends. Don't think you have 20 minutes? Make it 10, 15 or whatever you like! The average US Internet user spends about an hour per day online - so why not reduce your web surfing time, stop reading this post and go and read? :D

NetGalley Challenge at NBRC

NetGalley

About NetGalley

NetGalley is an innovative and easy-to-use online service
and connection point for book publishers, reviewers, media,
librarians, booksellers, bloggers and educators.

NetGalley delivers digital galleys, often called advance reading copies, or ARCs,
to professional readers and helps promote new and upcoming titles.
Professional readers--reviewers, media, journalists, bloggers, librarians,
booksellers and educators--can join and use NetGalley at no cost.

Feed Your Readers, the NetGalley Challenge

The NetGalley Challenge at Nothing but Reading Challenges is a new challenge designed to not only get you to read your NetGalley books, but to also advertise your reviews for others to see because after all, that's what NetGalley is all about.

If you are like most of us, you run to NetGalley and scour the new books to see what you want. Of course there are so many that you just click "Request" liberally, and before you know it you have a ton of books waiting on you and your ratio is in the 60%, or lower! Then, you get into the groove of reading and you don't want to stop. So you have all these books read, but no reviews, and your ratio is still low.

We have you covered!

April 16th will be "Review Day" in the NetGalley Challenge. For the 16th, and the 17th if you'd prefer, put down the books and start typing away! Get caught up on your reviews, posting them to NetGalley to raise your ratio. Don't forget to also post them within your thread so we can see what you think about what you've been reading!

Once you have been on Goodreads for a while you may find you list of books marked as "to read" (aka. TBR) growing. This is a recognised ailment at NBRC and so our Mod Karen has created a challenge "Cleaning out the TBR Closet" to try and help herself, and you, concentrate on reading the books that have been on your list the longest. Come and join us here

Disclaimer: Individual results may vary... We can not be held responsible if you happen to find books that others post in this challenge that you add to your TBR thereby compounding your ailment :)

Choose your own adventure reading challenges!

I remember in the 80s and 90s loving the "choose your own adventure" books. They really sparked my imagination and showed me the joy of possibilities. Our mod Karsyn has designed a series of CYOA challenges which will be released on a regular basis (fortnightly or monthly) with a new topic each time which will have a range of options for you to choose from. Your first adventure is ASTRONOMY. Come and join us here! https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/18066777-questions-answers

Book of the Month - Discussion Starting April 2, 2016

Our first BOM (Book of the Month) for April that was voted by you is American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis.
First published in 1991, the story is told in the first person by Patrick Bateman, a serial killer and successful businessman. Some of you may have seen the movie which was released back in 2000, or apparently there was also a musical version (who would have thought?!) in 2013.
You can come and join us to discuss this book here

Synopsis:
Patrick Bateman is handsome, well educated, intelligent. He works by day on Wall Street earning a fortune to complement the one he was born with. His nights he spends in ways we cannot begin to fathom. He is twenty-six years old and living his own American Dream.

NBRC has made it to Facebook!

One of the limitations of Goodreads is the ability to communicate with our group members. We can only send out "broadcast messages" which go to EVERY member of our group. We are very aware that not every member wants much communication from us, so we limit these emails to once a month.
This means, that we often get feedback, especially when we start team challenges, that members were unaware the team challenge was starting.
This is why we have created a blog and a Facebook page. It means we can post to our hearts content about upcoming challenges, books the group is reading etc. and you can opt in to follow the blog or FB page to receive these updates. We will also use this as our source of mass communication when we have lots to say (usually around team challenge time... ) along with the usual posts to threads in the group.

We will still continue to send our monthly newsletter, but we hope that by using these other mediums our members can be more connected and up to date with what is happening :)

The mod called Conoulty
Who was once known as Ryan
Hiding from Irish roots
She was tryin' and tryin'

But the leprechauns knew
That is why they came here
To find their lost queen
The one that they hold dear

They begged and they pleaded
For Renee to come home
She finally agreed
And has reclaimed her throne

But to rule two domains
Would be too much to bear
So only one crown
Is she able to wear

So sadly she stepped
Down from NBRC
Moderator for us
She will no longer be

She said "Tell them all
this is not a goodbye
I'll come back to visit
I'll stop in to say hi"

Those who have been hunting for coins and helped our precious mods to get back to their former self have till April the 4th to get their coins deposited.

Even small amounts of coins will be worth it for deposit, so please hurry!

Logo Design by FlamingText.com
Like all silly Leprechaun gold, all the coins gathered were bound to disappear. To avoid this, Queen Renee used her long forgotten magic and placed a spell on them and as she stepped into the fairy ring some of the gold was turned into Emerald Coins.

Want to know how many Emeral Coins you gathered? We'll let you know after the 4th!
